Its no secret Music is certainly a contributor to the use of Tobacco, Drugs & Alcohol among teenagers. According to a recent article in the New York Times teenagers spends approximately 2.5 hours daily listening to music. The article also states that One in three of every popular songs contains explicit lyrics referencing the use of these substances. 1.”Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine studied the 279 of the most popular songs from 2005, based on reports from Billboard magazine, which tracks popular music.” In the Report ” Only 9 percent of pop songs had lyrics relating to drugs or alcohol. The number jumped to 14 percent for rock songs, 20 percent for R&B and hip-hop songs, 36 percent for country songs and 77 percent for rap songs.” Notice 77 percent were rap songs, its not surprising that the majority of the blame would fall upon the Hip Hop Culture. Despite the fact that Rock & Roll has been a major influence to substance abuse and premarital sex among teens since the early 70s. Unquestionably, movies, television and Internet making obscenitiy easly accesible are also contributing factors. The question is, How can we as the voices of Hip Hop music effect change?
